Rachel Whiteread Sculptures

This is the work of my favourite sculptor, Rachel Whiteread. Her primary form of working is casting, specifically objects and spaces related to domesticity - her full castings of rooms, or in the case of 'House' (1993), an entire Victorian townhouse, draw their power from the unexpected solidifying of space; making the habitable unihabitable. 'House' lasted for only a short period of time before the local London borough that it was built in had it demolished - despite its demolition the work resulted in Whiteread becoming the first woman to win the Turner Prize (for best young British artist) in '93.
